AKEL ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE FASCIST COUP D’ETAT

On the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the fascist coup d’état, AKEL once again condemns in the strongest terms the coup d’état of the junta of Greece and EOKA B, which led to the beginning of the modern Cypriot tragedy. AKEL honors the memory of the resistance fighters who died fighting against the coup d’état and who were murdered by the EOKA B organization. We pay tribute to all the democratic resistance fighters, stressing that the resistance against the junta, EOKA B and the coup d’état is one of the most glorious pages of modern Cypriot history.

The fascist coup d’état of the Junta and EOKA B attempted to overthrow and murder President Makarios and resulted in the brutal Turkish invasion of Attila. Since then 39 years have passed, and Turkey is continuing its military occupation of 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus imposing by force of arms partition. The issue of the missing people, the enclaved people in the occupied areas, the refugees and war-stricken people is still open. The wound called the Cyprus problem is still bleeding. The threat of new sufferings and disasters still hangs over Cyprus. All these would not exist had the fascist coup d’état not taken place. The responsibilities of those who prepared – politically and ideologically – organized and carried out the coup d’état is, as well as of those who welcomed and supported the coup d’état morally and politically, are horrendous. The passage of time does not discharge and relieve them of these responsibilities.

The Finding of the “File of Cyprus” (Note: an all-parliamentary commission of the House of Representatives established to investigate and document the events leading up to and during the fascist coup d’état and Turkish invasion which reconfirmed the conspiratory role of NATO, in cooperation with the military junta of Greece and Turkey, as well as the Cypriot extreme right to execute the plans for the partition of Cyprus) is very clear, even if certain forces and circles who have a guilty conscience, dispute it. The coup d’état was the result of a conspiracy that was elaborated and prepared by NATO whose execution was assigned to the Athens Junta and the EOKA B organization of Grivas.  Any other approach is a travesty of historical truth and aims to pardon the major culprits of the Cyprus tragedy. We have a duty to keep the memory alive and resist those who by exploiting the plight of the economic crisis and the tragic accident at Mari are trying to make us forget the coup d’état and those responsible for it.

We hope that on this year’s tragic anniversary of the coup d’état we won’t have to hear again, and indeed by those in power, talk about “soldiers under orders “and about “honest patriotic motives” which certain forces and circles use as arguments to equate the coupists and the resistance fighters.

On the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the coup d’état and the invasion, AKEL is organizing a big anti-occupation meeting of memory, honor and struggle on Wednesday, 17th July at “Skali” in Aglantzia. AKEL calls on the people to make this a mass and militant event to honor our dead, demonstrate our will not let allow anything to be forgotten and to continue the struggle for the vindication of Cyprus and our people.
