AKEL on the Advisory Committee on Culture

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21st October 2020, Nicosia

Yesterday’s statement by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth announcing the establishment of an Advisory Committee for Culture raises plausible questions regarding its composition, as well as its arena of activity. However, the downgrading of the presence of women and young people, but also of important sectors of Culture is very clear and glaring. We also record the disregard of the proposals submitted by cultural agencies and organisations, as well as the absence of an institutional and systematic dialogue with all those involved in cultural activity.

AKEL, on the occasion of yesterday’s announcement on the setting up of the Advisory Committee, once again puts forth the position for the establishment of a Culture Council, which will have an advisory character, but with the participation of all cultural agencies/organisations in a meritocratic and representative manner. At the same time, AKEL calls for the acceleration of actions to address major problems in cultural activity, which have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, deteriorating the position of all those employed in the field of Culture.
