AKEL on the 75 years since the Victory of Humanity over fascism

Eternal gratitude to those who saved humanity

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8th May 2020, Nicosia

AKEL honors the 75th anniversary of the Antifascist Victory of the Peoples as a result of which World War II ended and the monster of Hitler fascism was crushed. The peoples of the world owe eternal gratitude to those who fought on the battlefields against the fascist axis, to the democrats and anti-fascists who fought in the Resistance movements, to the peoples who fought against foreign occupation.

We pay tribute to the thousands of Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots who fought fascism – and tens of millions sacrificed their lives – in the epoch making struggle for freedom, democracy and peace to prevail. For AKEL, which in its founding declaration in 1941 defined itself as a “Democratic, Anti-Fascist and Anti-Hitler” party, the decision taken by the Central Committee of the Party on 16th June 1943 with which hundreds of militants and members of AKEL voluntarily joined the army and fought fascism, is a badge of honor.

We honor the contribution of every human being and every people in the titanic victory of humanity. At the same time, we recognize that the Soviet Union, with tens of millions dead and wounded, had made the decisive and pivotal contribution to the Anti-fascist Victory. The outcome of the war and the triumph of humanity over barbarism were determined in the battles of Moscow, Leningrad, and Stalingrad. These historical truths cannot be overturned no matter how many efforts modern anti-communism may make which is rewriting History to suit the ultra-right and the apologists of fascism.

Today, humanity remembers the darkest pages of its history. The Holocaust and the concentration camps. The atrocities committed by the fascist axis in the countries it occupied. It remembers the martyrdom of the fraternal Greek people during the German occupation. The criminal nature of fascist ideology that seeks to prioritize people, nations and peoples. We honor the victims with the oath NEVER AGAIN FASCISM by struggling against those who in our country too call themselves to be “descendants of the defeated of 1945”, against racism and the ultra-right that are again threatening both in Europe and across the world democratic freedoms and human rights, working people’s gains, peace and solidarity against fascism, war and the system that gives birth to them.

The red flag with the hammer and sickle on the Reichstag will go down in human history as an eternal reminder that the peoples have justice on their side and the power to win it.
