AKEL on President’s proposal on the National Council

The existence of rules is not enough if these aren’t respected by everyone.

Written statement by Eleni Mavrou, member of the Political Bureau

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd July 2016

national councilAKEL considers the resumption of National Council’s operation as important, espacially at a time when efforts are underway to speed up the negotiations on the Cyprus problem. Although the National Council is on the one hand an advisory body, it is at the same time a place for sharing information and consultation, elements which AKEL considers as important.

It is a fact that the phenomenon of leaks and the transformation of the National Council into an arena of barren confrontations complicates its constructive operation, which is why we had accepted, as indeed all the political parties did, the rules of operation that had been proposed by the former President of the Republic D. Christofias. The existence of rules however is not enough if these are not respected by everyone.

We await the proposal submitted by President Anastasiades so that AKEL can state its position in a concrete manner.
