AKEL ON NATO SECRETARY-GENERAL´S STATEMENT

AKEL C.C Press Office Spokesman Georgios Loucaides

AKEL deplores the related references of the Secretary-General of NATO Rasmussen concerning the exploitation of the natural resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEC) of the Republic of Cyprus after the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The statements made by the Secretary-General of NATO do not come as any surprise ton AKEL, given that NATO continues to consider Turkey as particularly important for serving its own self-seeking interests in the region. It is within this framework which NATO views the solution of the Cyprus problem and utilisation of the natural resources in the Cyprus EEC.

The Cypriot people are still suffering from the disastrous actions of NATO in Cyprus, as it also knows that NATO is responsible for a whole series of unjust wars, dictatorships, fascist coup d’états and for the untold pain and torment it is causing to peoples all over the world.

It is in this Organisation that the Anastasiades government is insisting on Cyprus joining, a government that appears not to have learnt any lessons when just a few weeks ago Mr. Anastasiades´ other friends imposed in a brutal and ruthless way the devastating recipes for Cyprus´ economy.

At the same time when Mr. Anastasiades is addressing his friends in NATO to become a member of the so-called Partnership for Peace, they reply by using the arguments Turkey is projecting with regards the exercise of the sovereign rights of the EEC of the Republic of Cyprus.
