AKEL on International Women’s Day

8 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

This year’s anniversary of 8 March, International Women’s Day, finds us in the shadow of the war unfolding in neighbouring Palestine, with women and children being the main victims of the war unleashed by Israel. We express our full solidarity and support for the women of Palestine and join them in the struggle for peace and justice.

Today, in every corner of the world, people, especially women, are suffering from poverty, impoverishment, gender-based violence, they are victims of trafficking rings and paying with their own lives the price of nature’s fury and human-made destruction.

At the same time, the women of Cyprus are confronted daily with inequalities and discrimination which are rooted in anachronistic sexist attitudes. At the same time, government policies have dismantled the welfare state and driven thousands of women to the brink of poverty and social exclusion. The absence of effective support for victims of gender violence, the deregulation of labour relations, the limited number of childcare and elderly care facilities, the lack of support for parenthood are just some of the problems that women in our country are facing today.

All this is an arena of daily struggle for AKEL, which will continue to stand with women on a daily basis, especially the most vulnerable, single parents, pensioners, unemployed women, migrant women, LGBTI women, women with disabilities, and to demand that social equality and gender equality be put into practice.
