AKEL on EOKA Fighters Association statement: “Their hatred for the Left is incurable”

The fact that the EOKA Fighters Association issued a statement against the theatrical play “1958” of the “Antilogos” Theatre, in order to defend murderers and murders is a shameful act for the country and represents a provocation for the Cypriot people as a whole. It is well-known that the Association employs pathological anti-communism at every opportunity and of course in every election. However, their shameless attempt to justify with lies the barbaric murder of AKEL militant Savvas Menoikou, Maria Haritou and 13-year-old Despoula Katsouri by Grivas’ armed groups confirms that their hatred for the Left and its people remains toxic and incurable.
History doesn’t change no matter what anyone may write. The assassinations of militants and members of AKEL and of the mass organisations of the Left during the period of EOKA’s activity were part of Grivas’ declared plan to exterminate the Left in Cyprus and even to provoke a civil war. They were cowardly murdered because they belonged to the Left and because they refused to succumb and yield to the terror unleashed by Grivas’ masked bullies seeking to force them to leave the Party and abandon their ideology. It is anything but a coincidence that their fascist “counterparts” within the Turkish Cypriot community were at the same time murdering Turkish Cypriot AKEL militants/members and trade unionists, while the British colonialists had banned the Party for a second time.
If the authors of the statement denounce the traitors, then they should start from putting an end to praising the leading member of the Organisation “X” in Greece, namely Grivas, whose actions led to the most extensive betrayal and destruction that our country has ever witnessed.
As regards the struggle of EOKA, we recall the words of the late prominent EOKA fighter Ourania Kokkinou: “The traitors were all members of the Organization and fanatical national-minded persons” (April 1991). The History of Cyprus unequivocally shows that the biggest traitors hid behind the banners of sinful “national-mindedness” and anti-AKELism.
During AKEL’s 100 years of life and struggles, many forces and circles have attempted to slander and defame it as an “anti-national” force. As a rule, however, AKEL’s slanderers proved to be the ones who opened the back doors of betrayal with execution of the coup d’état, the ones who participate in carrying out foreign plans against our homeland or who are even discussing the partition of the island behind the backs of the people. The patriotism of AKEL is written with the blood that has been shed and the sacrifices of its heroes. Menoikos and Ttofaris, Kavazoglou and Misiaoulis, Kousoulides, Sotiris Adamos Konstantinou, the Papalazarou brothers, Ioannides, Karasamanis and hundreds of other children of our people.
60 years ago, some people dipped their hands in blood to exterminate AKEL and the Left. Now, they are dipping them into the dirty ink of unhistorical propaganda with the same goal. They are wasting their time…
