AKEL MP Giorgos Koukoumas made an intervention via internet in the debates held during the 19th Inter-Parliamentary Conference on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union (EU), within the context of the parliamentary dimension of the current Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
AKEL MEP Giorgos Koukoumas criticized the double-standards logic and policy implemented by the EU and pointed out the usefulness of drawing lessons from past experiences during the debate on the review of the EU’s foreign policy in the light of new international challenges.
In the discussion on the review of the EU’s foreign policy in the face of new international challenges, AKEL MP G.Koukoumas stressed that, in formulating its foreign policy, the EU must be guided by the principles of international law and its top priority must be the promotion of the objectives of peace, stability and cooperation.
The Union’s foreign policy must aim at defending democracy, the rule of law and human rights and be based on respect for the multilateral rules governing international relations, the AKEL MP underlined.
Furthermore, the Cypriot MEP pointed out that by remaining doggedly attached to the belief that the threats to the EU’s security come from the East, first and foremost from China and Russia, the EU risks losing both its ability to act proactively and its credibility, particularly when sanctions are being imposed on Russia, while at the same time the EU is promoting a “positive agenda” for Turkey, amidst the intensifying Turkish provocative actions against the Republic of Cyprus, in violation of international law, the relevant Resolutions of the UN and European principles and values.
