AKEL MEP’s joint statement on the violent incidents in Cyprus
7 June 2023
The joint statement on the latest incidents of violence in Cyprus issued by AKEL MEP’s Giorgos Georgiou and Niyazi Kizilyurek:
“We follow with concern the increase in racist and sexual assaults in Cyprus.
We had the attack on an LGBTI event in Limassol, the beating of a young delivery driver and most recently the attack on a Turkish Cypriot young woman Asia Karali in Ayia Napa.
We unequivocally condemn all these violent behaviours.
These actions are not appropriate in an EU member state in the 21st century. They violate universal human values and do not honor Cyprus.
We call on the government to take severe measures to effectively deal with these phenomena.
Political will and zero tolerance on the part of the state is demanded to eliminate such actions.
We consider the role of education to be important too in order to properly educate our children on issues relating to xenophobia, racism and sexual prejudice.
We as AKEL MEP’s will continue our struggle for a society free of racism, intolerance and every discrimination. We want a multicultural Cyprus that respects every person with their particularities.”
