8 November 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
With its main concern to maintain its leading role in the broader spectrum of the Left, creating the dynamics to attain the maximum possible broad support among its social base, covering the entire progressive spectrum and following the mandate of its Party Congress held in July 2021, AKEL is planning changes based on two pillars: Firstly, the organisational reconstruction regarding Party’s the structure, forms of work and procedures and secondly, its organisational and two-way political relationship with social organisations, groups, movements and personalities with which AKEL shares the same sensitivities, goals and political agendas on general and specific issues.
AKEL’s objectives were analysed by the General Secretary of the Party Stefanos Stefanou at a press conference held yesterday, within the context of a lunch with mass media people, noting at the same time that decisions have already been taken to elaborate, discuss and adopt changes:
- The convening of a Statutory Congress in the autumn of 2023 to a) allow time for the changes to be the subject of fermentation and discussion with Party members and friends, and b) to complete the procedures and take decisions in a way that ensures sufficient time for the elections in May 2024 (Local Authority and European elections).
2.The establishment of committees to discuss changes to the Party’s Constitution and Rules of Procedure, the reconstruction of the custom of the New Forces and strengthening of the two-way relationship with social organisations, movements/personalities in order to forge a broader progressive alliance, as well as the improvement of the Party’s organizational mechanism.
The introductory speech of the General Secretary of AKEL was followed by numerous questions and a fruitful dialogue with journalists on the need for these changes, ON the character and even the magnitude of the changes and timing of the changes announced.
The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied by members of the party’s Secretariat and MP’s.
