AKEL General Secretary on Varosha: The rift will deepen – things will get extremely difficult

AKEL will file a complaint with the UN, the members of the UN Security Council and the EU with regards Turkey’s illegal actions and moves to colonise the fenced off city of Famagusta, stressed the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL.

Speaking on the ASTRA radio “Morning Edition” programme, Andros Kyprianou announced that AKEL will also proceed to organise protest meetings in Cyprus and the EU against Turkey’s illegal actions.

Concerning the proposal put forth by President Anastasiades to the UN Secretary General, Mr. Kyprianou said he would not comment on press reports, since he has no official briefing about it from the government.

Commenting on Akinci’s statements, and in particular the proposal to open Varosha with direct flights from Tymbou Airport (in the occupied areas), the General Secretary of AKEL said it has been tabled before and has been rejected.

Andros Kyprianou noted that if Turkey proceeds on the issue of Famagusta, then the rift will deepen and things will get extremely difficult.

The safest way to avoid the worst, he added, is for meaningful talks for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem to resume.

The General Secretary of AKEL also pointed out that the authorities’ commitment to resolving the Cyprus solution is of utmost importance, and recalled that due to the steadfastness and consistency in the positions of the Christofias government, there were consequences for Turkey’s policy.
