AKEL for the anniversary of the October Revolution

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th November 2020, Nicosia

AKEL honors the anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, which represents a major milestone in the history of the world and in the struggle of the peoples for a world of justice, peace and social equality.

The October Revolution gave birth to the first workers’ state in human history and this meant the safeguarding of unprecedented social rights for the people, workers and the peasantry. Unemployment, poverty and illiteracy were radically combatted. Great advances were made in culture and science, education and health. The emancipation of women, the equality of the sexes and the separation of church and state materialized.

At the same time, the Soviet Union led the world struggle to crush Hitler-fascism by rescuing human civilization. It supported the peoples and movements that struggled against fascism, racism and racial discrimination. It made a decisive contribution to the collapse of colonialism by supporting the national liberation movements across the world. It stood with consistency on the side of the struggling peoples throughout the world, including the people of Cyprus too. We point out that the Resolutions of the United Nations, which until today represent the protective shield of the Republic of Cyprus and the principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem, were achieved with the valuable support of the community of socialist states.

AKEL honors the October Revolution and its messages. AKEL is guided in its action by the ideology and values of the October Revolution with the content they take in the specific conditions of our country and our times. At the same time, precisely because it has studied the positive, but also the negative experience from the Soviet Union, far from idealizations and glorifications, it rejects the levelling of its contribution.

Today, the apologists of the capitalist system, the Right and extreme right are slandering as outdated utopias the ideals of social justice, organized and collective struggle, the struggles of the peoples and workers and the revolutionary vision of an alternative world. However, it is life itself which gave birth to the revolutions that have shaken the world and made utopias a reality. It is the deadlocks of capitalism around the world, the enormous social inequalities, the environmental catastrophe, the danger of a generalized war and the threat from fascism that highlight today too the need for a different path for humanity, for a socialist tomorrow in our country and throughout the whole world.
