The procedures and decisions with regards the presidential elections are expected to be completed in June, at an AKEL extraordinary Pancyprian Congress, the Party’s General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou said yesterday.

In statements on the sidelines of an Easter-related event organised by the EDON local organisation in the Municipality of Deryneia, in front of the Folklore Museum of Deryneia, S. Stefanou said that “we have procedures which we will continue with immediately after Easter. First we will proceed with our procedures, then the plenary of the Central Committee of AKEL will convene. We will subsequently address the party membership to discuss and then come back to the Central Committee to assess the whole discussion and views expressed by the party membership”.

S.Stefanou added that “based on the procedure we have in the party, we shall take our final decisions at an extraordinary Pancyprian Congress scheduled to take place in June, where we will complete the Party procedures and take our decisions to begin work on the presidential elections.”

Asked whether further meetings will be held with other political parties besides the Democratic Party DIKO, S. Stefanou said that “we have already held meetings with parties during Easter We discussed certain things with the parties, we will see what their reaction and response will be,” he said, noting that “naturally we will continue to be in contact with these parties, but at the same time we will be going through our own internal party procedures.”

Asked if there will be a new meeting with DIKO now that the name of former diplomat Andreas Mavroyiannis is coming to the fore 9as a presidential candidate), the General Secretary of AKEL replied that “we always keep our doors open for any meetings, but at the same time we also have our procedures, because at some point we’ll need to finish up and take our decisions”.
