AKEL expresses its solidarity with the Cuban people and Government

12th July 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL expresses its support and solidarity with the people and government of Cuba and denounces the new attempt by certain circles in the US to create instability in the country. The leadership and people of Cuba have given an immediate response by defending the sovereignty, independence, freedom and dignity of the Cuban people.

It is well known that for over 60 years successive US governments have sought to overthrow the Cuban Revolution and the path of development chosen by the Cuban people. For years, the US has been aiming to break Cuba economically and create discontent among the population through the imposition of an economic, commercial and financial blockade.  The tightening of the blockade with the imposition of 243 additional measures during the pandemic period has hit the country’s economy and the daily lives of the people. The attempt to spread misinformation and the false call for the formation of a so-called ‘humanitarian corridor’ represents a call for military intervention.

If there was a real concern for the health and human life of the Cuban people, then the US should have stopped violating the UN Charter years ago, and lifted the illegal blockade of Cuba as 184 UN member states at the UN General Assembly have demanded on 23rd June.

AKEL unites its voice with the demand for the immediate termination of the criminal blockade and the full respect for the sovereignty and independence of Cuba.
