AKEL expresses its concern about the rise of ultra-right forces

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th October 2017, Nicosia

As AKEL, we express our deep concern about the growth of ultra-right parties in Europe, after the outcome of yesterday’s parliamentary elections in Austria as well. The ultra-right “Freedom” Party has secured an increase in its electoral percentage and is very likely, after 12 years, to again be a government ally of the conservative People’s Party. It is yet another party that uses hate rhetoric, racist and xenophobic discourse, targeting mainly minority groups and immigrants, but also all those who are expressing opposition to their political discourse.

AKEL insists on another path in Europe in general, but also in Cyprus in more specifically; a path that will express the social and economic needs of the majority of the people, and not of the privileged few; a path that will respond to the challenges of our time, aiming at forging relations of peace and cooperation, with respect for all the peoples irrespective of size and choices made.

Within this framework, as AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Group, we have tabled a relevant resolution in the House of Representatives and we express the wish and hope that it will be voted in the plenary next Friday. We primarily want the implementation of measures and actions to be taken, which are included in the resolution, that constitute international obligations of the Republic of Cyprus, in order to prevent the growth and strengthening of these phenomena in Cyprus as well.
