AKEL Environment Affairs Bureau on World Animal Day

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd October 2020, Nicosia

In recent decades, our planet’s animals are disappearing at an unprecedented rate.

The UN Commission on Biodiversity report concludes that between 500,000 and 1 million species of plants and animals face the threat of extinction in the coming decades.

animalsThe report reiterates that there is only one factor responsible for this worrying trend: human actions. Pollution, deforestation and the loss of habitat due to agriculture and development have already “severely changed” 75% of the total land and 40% of the marine environment.

“Human actions are threatening more species with global extinction now than ever before.”

World Animal Day is the occasion for even more action to be taken to protect the environment and nature and therefore wildlife.

Along with the above, more and more problems related to the welfare and protection of pets are coming to the surface.

In our country in recent years the phenomenon of the abandonment of animals and animal abuse has increased significantly. Stricter measures and controls are demanded, but they alone will not provide the solution. Action, briefing of the people and knowledge are demanded so that all citizens become sensitive and aware.

We have to thank the volunteers in animal shelters. They are trying every day to fill the serious gaps in the legislation, with regards the indifference of the public and the deficiencies of state bodies by operating these shelters.

The reinforcement of existing centres and provision of support for shelters must be institutionalized.

Within this fraemwork, the Environment Affairs Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL is organizing a campaign in support of our country’s shelters and we call on all those who can to support this campaign.
