AKEL draft proposal tabled for the separation of Church and State

Statements by AKEL MP Aristos Damianou

1 December 2022

The revision of Family Law was discussed in Parliament, with AKEL MP Aristos Damianou pointing out that quite a few proposals that AKEL had submitted were accepted, except for the key position of principle, namely the separation of State and Church as regards the settlement of a marriage, which was not accepted by the government.

This is precisely why AKEL will submit next Friday, “a draft bill in the form of an urgent motion, to the Plenary of the House of Representatives, which will abolish the Law on Attempted Conciliation and Spiritual Resolution of Marriage, so that when it comes to civil divorces, they will not depend on an outdated provision that puts the Church of Cyprus in the frame of the whole procedure”. The AKEL MP added that it is a repealing draft bill since it also concerns constitutional issues.
