AKEL discusses the pressing and important issues of education in a creative and constructive way

Statement by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, S.Stefanou after the meeting with the new Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athina Michaelides

28 March 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

I have welcomed the new Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athina Michaelidou, together with her colleagues, to the Central Committee of AKEL.

We had a very interesting and constructive discussion on the issues of education. AKEL is very interested in these issues, issues that are relevant to the present and future of our country because it is a proven fact that states and societies that invest in education ultimately ensure their future, progress and prosperity.

For that reason, it is very important to have an education system which, first and foremost, makes sure that children are happy, and a happy child means that he or she enjoys life, wants to create and in this way unleashes his or her talents and potential to move forward.

Of course, it is very important on education issues to apply pedagogical methods and policies, and there is a huge amount of experience of this matter internationally. The issues before us are difficult. The Minister has many important issues to deal with and some of them are pressing, such as the issue of quarterly examinations, which we have also discussed.

AKEL is always creative, especially on education issues, and I have informed Mrs. Michaelidou that we will always discuss issues in a creative and constructive way. I have assured the Minister that AKEL’s door will always be open to the Ministry of Education and the Minister herself to discuss issues that have to do with our education. Of course, this dialogue often finds expression in the House of Representatives on the various issues that the government brings forward.

I would like to wish Mrs. Michaelidou good work and strength to cope with the many challenges and stakes that we have in education for the good of our children, society and country. I think it is very important that Mrs. Michaelidou has many representations from the field of education, because she herself comes from it and I am sure that this will help towards addressing the problems and responding positively to the challenges.
