AKEL denounces government’s policy on foreclosures

Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL Political Bureau member and AKEL MP

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th February 2017, Nicosia

econ evictionsWhen the Anastasiades- DISY party government cut the safety net against foreclosures, it used the so-called insolvency framework as a flimsy excuse. At the same time, it announced various schemes supposedly to protect the main family home from foreclosures, which it has never implemented in practice.

Life has shown that in addition to the regulations AKEL and other forces promoted, no other protection whatsoever exists against foreclosures. The government and state cannot turn its back on thousands of our fellow citizens whose homes and small businesses are facing the threat of foreclosure.

This is also the reason why AKEL will seek to come to an understanding with other political forces, aiming at bringing back proposals to protect main family homes and small business premises.
