AKEL resolutely and categorically opposes the registering of the issue of the works of Turkish Cypriot writers for discussion
Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th February 2017
Concerning “Politis” newspaper’s front page today, which refers to a registration of an issue for discussion in the Committee on Education Affairs of the House of Representatives concerning the work of Turkish Cypriot writers as part of the curriculum of our schools, I declare that when the issue was raised the AKEL Members of Parliament in the Committee were resolutely and categorically opposed to the registering of the issue for discussion. AKEL did so because of political, educational and for knowledgebase reasons, as well as for a thousand other reasons.
We wonder, what is the position of the other political parties?
What is the position of the governing DISY party on the matter?
AKEL recalls that DISY chairs the Committee on Education Affairs of the House of Representatives.
What is the position of the Democratic Party, whose MP signed the registration of the issue for discussion with MP’s of ELAM and “Citizens Alliance”?
We ask that the issue be withdrawn. For the issue to be registered for discussion, the support of the majority of the members of the Education Committee is required.
AKEL is against and will remain against the registration and discussion of this issue.
