AKEL denounces censorship and interference in the public broadcasting station RIK
3 May 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The complaint filed of interference on the part of a senior Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK) executive in order to prohibit EDEK MP Costis Efstathiou from taking part in the midday TV news programme of the public broadcasting station is extremely serious and violates the freedom of press and journalistic ethics. It follows a series of cases of interference on the part of superiors, cases of the censorship of programmes and biased behaviour by RIK under the current government.
It is regrettable that today, on World Press Freedom Day, we need to be remind that RIK is a public broadcasting station that should inform the Cypriot people and should serve no others.
The Management and Board of RIK must take a stand and provide clear answers regarding those responsible for this action.
