AKEL demands Government take measures against attacks on Turkish Cypriots

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 9th August 2016, Nicosia

cc AKEL ezekiaAKEL condemns in the strongest possible terms the chauvinist attack against the leading member of the Turkish Cypriot Socialist Party while his was driving his car outside APOEL football club on 2nd August.

On the pretext of the statement issued by the Turkish Cypriot Socialist Party the day before yesterday, which denounces the action, AKEL once more raises the alarm about the incidents of attacks against Turkish Cypriots that take place specifically at the point of the traffic lights in front of APOEL’s club.

We don’t need to point out how much harm and damage the incidents of attacks against Turkish Cypriots cause to the relations between the two Cypriot communities and to the ongoing efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. It is the responsibility of the Government to decisively address the incidents of attacks against Turkish Cypriots that are being observed at this specific point and to finally put an end to these incidents.

AKEL will struggle with every means at its disposal so that the poison of nationalism and chauvinism will not prevail in both society and in the minds of the people.

AKEL will continue to be the force that holds out its hand to the Turkish Cypriot community for the construction of a reunited federal Cyprus in conditions of lasting peace and security for all its citizens.
