AKEL DELEGATION TO THE ENCLAVED PEOPLE IN RIZOKARPASO OCCUPIED REGION

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12th November 2013, Nicosia

An AKEL delegation composed of Christos Christofides, Head of the Education Office of the C.C. of AKEL, Chrysanthos Zannettou, District Secretary of AKEL Famagusta District Organisation, Christakis Giovanni, AKEL MP, Haris Karamanos, General Secretary of EDON Youth Organisation, Christos Nikolaou Secretary of EDON Famagusta District Organisation and Yiannos Pieri, member of the AKEL Famagusta District Organisation visited yesterday, Monday, 11th November the occupied Rizokarpaso region.

The visit to the Rizokarpaso Primary and High School launched the annual visits organised by AKEL to educational institutions and establishments of the country. At the Rizokarpaso Primary and High School the AKEL Delegation had the opportunity to talk with students and teachers in both schools, express their support and listen to the problems they face.

The Delegation of AKEL expresses its appreciation for the work done by our teachers in both schools, as well as for the timeless support provided the state to our enclaved children.

We have identified, after discussing with students and teachers as the most important problem the lack of creative afternoon recreation for the school students (the Primary school operates all-day). In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education and Culture we propose that a specific room, which teachers indicated, be turned into a room multi-activity room and the High School also function  during the evenings as an “Open School”. At the same time, a form of the State Training Institutes should operate in the High School to offer the possibility mainly of learning foreign languages, since there are no other opportunities. This is the main demand of the children of the High School. The teachers of the School and the Director have stated their readiness to contribute to such an effort.

We express the certainty that the Ministry of Education will respond to such a demand. As AKEL, we have expressed our readiness to contribute towards providing the equipment of the multi-purpose activity hall which the school needs.

Finally, the delegation of AKEL visited the monastery of Apostolos Andreas. At monastery we had the opportunity talk to Father Zachariou about the situation of the monastery and the need to start as soon as the work of restoration. The need to save the monastery, which is in a bad situation, is pressing and imperative.
