AKEL concern and outrage at the persecution of 2 Turkish Cypriot journalists

Statement by Christos Christofides, AKEL Political Bureau member

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 1st August 2018, Nicosia

We vehemently denounce the persecution of the Turkish Cypriot journalists Sener Levent and Ali Osman referral by the Turkish Government. The indictment of the journalists to face trial in Ankara is a violation of human rights. The persecutions against the Turkish Cypriot journalists prove that there are still powerful forces within the Turkish Cypriot community that are opposed to the gradual integration of the occupied territories to Turkey. This integration is manifested in several ways.

At the same time, it is also another worrying sign about the fact that the gradual integration of the occupied territories to Turkey is continuing at a rapid pace. It is yet another indication of what the continuous passage of time will mean for Cyprus and the Cypriot people without a correct solution to the Cyprus problem.

We call on the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, European and International Institutions and Organizations to take the necessary initiatives to defend the human rights of our compatriot journalists, for the defence of the freedom of expression and safety of the two journalists.
