AKEL calls for a mass participation in the Cyprus Peace Council demonstration being organised against the Akrotiri British base

An end must be put to Israel’s crimes immediately!

12 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The war front in our geographical neighbourhood continues to rage and unfortunately is spreading day by day, creating flashpoints that trigger the danger of a widespread military conflict. This situation also exposes our country to serious dangers.

In the light of South Africa’s well-documented and damning accusations presented at the International Court of Justice in The Hague of genocide having been committed by the State of Israel against the Palestinian people, the bloodshed is continuing.

Israel remains unrepentant, carrying out its plans against the Palestinian people with the full support of its allies. More than 23,000 people have been killed, the overwhelming majority of them children and civilians, but the European Union is still essentially remaining silent, tacitly supporting the crime being committed before us.

The Christodoulides government is also keeping totally silent, still not finding a single word to condemn the war crimes Israel is committing in Gaza and the West Bank, indeed at a time when the territory of the Republic of Cyprus is being turned into an aggressive launching pad to serve the war plans of the US and Britain, as the British Ministry of Defence has also confirmed.

AKEL with absolute consistency continues to demand an immediate end to Israel’s crimes and the termination of the occupation of Palestinian territories. It demands an immediate and complete ceasefire and the finding of a peaceful and just solution with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the basis of the resolutions of the UN.

We call on the Cypriot people to participate en masse in the demonstration being organised by the Cyprus Peace Council on Sunday, 14 January 2024 at 11 am at Akrotiri, condemning the air strikes carried out from the British bases in support of the military operations underway in the Gaza Strip and Yemen.
