AKEL on the anniversary of 28th October 1940 the Greek people’s epic struggle against fascism

AKEL C.C, 27th October 2015, Nicosia

20 Oct intToday, we celebrate and honor with emotion the heroic “NO”, with which the Greek people en masse responded to the forces of fascism in 1940. We honour and express our admiration of those who fought and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their homeland and the defeat of fascism, among which thousands of Cypriot volunteers also fought. We solemnly bow our heads in respect of the volunteers of AKEL, who willingly answered the call issued by the Party and fought Hitler fascism in Greece, Europe and in North Africa.

The Anniversary of 28th October 1940 is a shining landmark in the history of the Greek people and humanity’s struggle against fascism and Nazism. The “NO” expressed by the Greek people marked the beginning of a glorious epic written in golden letters in the history of the world, precisely because it conveyed the message to the whole world that Hitler fascism is not invincible. The momentous milestone of 1940, which continued and culminated in the National Resistance between the years 1941-1944, is clear proof of the power that a people has once it becomes organized and struggles for its rights.

The Epic of 1940 clearly shows us the path of unity, struggle and resistance. Together we must continue the just struggle which our people has been waging for 41 years for freedom, whilst remaining consistent to the principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem and to the strategic goal of bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

On the occasion of the anniversary of 28th October, AKEL salutes the volunteer fighters of the Second World War and the fighters of all democratic and anti-fascist struggles of our people. AKEL also send conveys a warm greeting to the Greek people, who is suffering very harshly and expresses the wish that through its struggles it will overcome the current tragic situation and again take the path of prosperity and progress.
