AKEL on the 32nd anniversary since the illegal declaration of the pseudo-state
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th November 2015, Nicosia
This year marks 32 years since the illegal declaration of the pseudo-state in the occupied areas. This provocative, arbitrary and illegal action illustrated once again Ankara’s plans for the partition of Cyprus. Unfortunately, despite the international condemnation of this action too, which is particularly stressed in resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984) of the UN Security Council that consider the declaration of the pseudo-state legally invalid and call upon all states not to recognize it, the occupation and its results are continuing.
On the occasion of today’s anniversary, we call upon the international community to at last send strong signals to Ankara. At the same time, our own firm commitment to the goal of the solution of the Cyprus problem is the only way to reverse the faits accomplis of the Turkish invasion and occupation.
This negotiation procedure is being waged at a time when there is a state of affairs for a positive outcome. This, however, must be proved at the negotiating table and by the positions that will be submitted. The dedication to all that has already been agreed to and the utilization of the Christofias-Talat convergences can protect the procedure from deviations, but also move things forward at a faster pace.
AKEL underlines that the unwavering goal remains the liberation and reunification of Cyprus. AKEL remains committed to the position that the solution of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, as defined by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions with a single sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship safeguarded, is the only available path to lift the partitionist faits accomplis.
On the anniversary of the proclamation of the pseudo-state, AKEL is organizing an anti-occupation political rally tomorrow, Saturday, 14th November, 2015, at the end of Ledra Street in Nicosia at 11:00 p.m. The main speaker at the event will be the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou.
