AHK’s role for our country’s energy sufficiency and security is decisive
Meeting of the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL with the trade unions of the Cyprus Electricity Authority (AHK)
15 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Today’s meeting of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, with the trade unions of AHK concluded the contacts that have been held within the framework of AKEL’s campaign on energy issues.
During the meeting, the important and urgent issues related to AHK and its decisive role as a public organisation in the country’s energy issues were discussed, and in particular the investments to be made by AHK for its penetration in the field of RES, both in energy production and storage systems.
Stefanos Stefanou pointed out that the delay in the arrival of natural gas for electricity generation is a major problem for both Cyprus and AHK itself. He stressed that as long as the arrival of natural gas is delayed and the production of electricity with fuel oil and diesel continues, the fines for pollutants will continue but at the same time, an investment of 150 million euros by AHK will remain unused.
A convergence of views on the role and position of the Authority has been recorded between AKEL and the trade unions of AHK, namely EPOPAH, SIDIKEK, SEPAH and SYBAHK. AKEL will continue to support AHK so that it can operate for the benefit of society, the economy and citizens.
As part of AKEL’s energy campaign, the Party’s General Secretary also met with the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Giorgos Papanastasiou, the Board of Directors of AHK, the Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA), the Cyprus Transmission System Operator’s Directorate and the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (RAEK).
