A.Kyprianou: An effort must be made to resume the dialogue

“Haravgi” newspaper, Sunday 12th March 2017

genevaThings will be completely different on the Cyprus problem after March 2018 if the current procedure is left to collapse, the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou warned speaking to the ASTRA radio station programme “Without Limits”.

The General Secretary of AKEL also pointed out that if Turkey does not want a solution the Greek Cypriot side must thwart this plan and undertake an effort for the resumption of the dialogue. At the same time, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that the government does not operate towards this end and wished – as presidential elections are approaching – that Nicos Anastasiades will not say that he led the Cyprus problem close to a solution and call for his re-election for a few months. At the same time the General Secretary of AKEL also criticized the stand taken by the Turkish Cypriot leader. He added that it is politically naive to believe that when the referendum in Turkey ends the negotiations will start on their own.

Andros Kyprianou noted that in the last six months no progress whatsoever has been recorded in the negotiations, which is exactly the reason why AKEL proposed a change in methodology and is proposing the discussion of important issues in a package, provided that nothing is agreed unless everything is agreed.
