A comprehensive social policy and support for working people’s incomes is needed

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, visited the Nicosia branch of the People’s Social Solidarity Network today to deliver AKEL’s financial contribution.

Stefanos Stefanou congratulated the Network for the work it is doing and assured that AKEL will continue to support its activity. He referred to the Network’s very important activity which seeks to support people and families in need. “Unfortunately, the number of people in need is increasing year after year, and especially in recent years because of the price increases and expensiveness,” the General Secretary of AKEL underlined.

“AKEL’s aim is to make the activity of Networks such as this one unnecessary, at least as far as providing support to families and people is concerned,” he noted, adding that “for this to happen, however, we above all need to have a social policy as a state that should meet the needs of all those who need the state’s support and warmth. We dont have such a social policy.”

The General Secretary of AKEL said that “working people’s incomes need to be supported more, because in recent years wage increases are below the average price increases and this widens the inequalities that are greater than before in recent years because of the downgrading of work, the quality of work and the deregulation of labour relations”, concluding that “this is also our objective, that is, to continue to work for the regulation of labour. To restore rights to working people. To continue to raise wages so that we can strengthen working people’s incomes.”

He pointed out that “if all these things are not done, the suffering, poverty and misery that a significant section of our society is experiencing will continue. This is a wound for our country.”
