The country is thirsty – the government waters golf courses
10 November 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
At the same time as Cyprus is experiencing years of drought, the government shows a preference for golf courses over the needs of citizens and our country’s agricultural community. We call on the government of Nikos Christodoulides to reinstate the Ministerial decisions of February and June 2009, which ended the supply of water to golf courses from government water projects.
These decisions were changed in 2013 by the Anastasiades-DISY government. The Christodoulides government is continuing this policy.
We call on the government to immediately review the decisions to supply water from dams to golf courses, to stop supplying water to non-productive developments, and to ensure that the public commodity of water serves first and foremost the basic needs of people and agricultural production.
