AKEL and the Left Group achieve an important victory for Cyprus in the European Parliament
AKEL and the Left Group have achieved an important victory for Cyprus in the European Parliament. In the context of the resolution “On the Future of European Defence”, AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou tabled on behalf of the Left Group an amendment calling on NATO member Türkiye to withdraw its troops from Cyprus and work for a solution on the basis of the UN Resolutions; this was adopted by an overwhelming majority of 485 MEPs. Specifically, our amendment reads as follows: (The European Parliament) “Reiterates its call on Türkiye, a NATO member, to withdraw its troops from Cyprus, an EU Member State, and work constructively to find a viable and peaceful solution based on the relevant UN resolutions”. This development is significant given the current processes by the EU of upgrading Türkiye and in view of the enlarged Geneva meeting (on the Cyprus problem).
On the other hand, ELAM’s attempt to appropriate the development and distort the facts is blatant. The MEP of ELAM, after the deadline for tabling amendments and after being informed of the amendment tabled by the Left, presented an oral amendment, but removed the reference to the basis for a solution of the Cyprus problem ie the UN resolutions. However, the UN Resolutions are the Republic of Cyprus’ shield against Turkish aggression and its divisionist claims. This is why AKEL voted against ELAM’s amendment and this is why its amendment received much less support.
