The exclusion of the Left and the opening to the extreme right is not innovation but reminiscent of other times
The member of the C.C. of AKEL Costas Costa will not accept his reappointment to the board of the state-owned Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK)
22 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The President of the Advisory Council today questioned why the two major parties want to participate in the boards of the semi-governmental organisations (SGOs) since they do not agree with the President’s policy. Mr. Christodoulides’ has failed to live up this promises that he would appoint capable and deserving people regardless of party affiliation or political identity.
The result, however, is that Mr. Christodoulides has for the umpteenth time broken his promises. He has appointed President’s office holders and members of the ruling coalition parties and DISY. He selected persons for boards in crucial organisations who should be screened for conflict of interest because of their business and professional activities. It entered into a collusion with the far-right ELAM by appointing a member of a party that even openly praises the Greek Junta and deliberately excludes almost completely any person with left-wing backgrounds.
Mr. Christodoulides should be aware that excluding the Left and simultaneously embracing the far right is not an innovation, but rather reminiscent of other, darker times in the history of our country.
The member of the Central Committee of AKEL, Kosta Kostas, who was reappointed to the Board of RIK, will not accept the appointment in protest at the political decision taken by the Christodoulides government to virtually completely exclude from the boards of the semi-governmental organisations any person coming from the Left, including people who, as government Ministers themselves admitted, have served the organisations conscientiously and effectively over the past years.
