AKEL was, is and will continue to be on the side of the Palestinian people until their vindication
AKEL ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE
29 November 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
This year’s International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People finds the heroic people of Palestine suffering from Israel’s brutal attack on the Gaza Strip, which has turned into an operation of ethnic cleansing and genocide. The total destruction of Gaza into ruins and the uprooting of more than 1.5 million people constitutes a war crime and state terrorism, with the Israeli state and the Netanyahu government as the culprits and the leaderships of the US and EU as accomplices.
Today, we are raising our voice even louder together with millions of other people around the world demanding:
- Immediate ceasefire and humanitarian truce, full restoration of water, electricity, fuel, food, medical supplies and all needed humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.
- Release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian political prisoners.
- End the war and a two-state solution by implementing the Resolutions of the UN. End the ongoing Israeli occupation and colonalisation, declaring an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, next to the State of Israel.
The Cypriot people – themselves victims of war, occupation and colonisation – cannot accept the mass murder of children and civilians, the brutality of the occupying power against a people fighting for their freedom.
AKEL calls on the Cypriot people to resist Israel’s communication propaganda which is seeking to turn the truth about the perpetrator and the victim upside down in order to have accomplices in committing its crimes. At the same time, AKEL demands that Cyprus should not have any involvement whatsoever in the war, that Cyprus’ territory must not be used in any way for launching military attacks and that the Israeli war machine must not be facilitated.
The fact that the Christodoulides government, for 50 days now, has not said even a single word regarding the demand for a truce and a ceasefire, nor has it made the slightest criticism of Israel’s gross violations of international humanitarian law, is nothing less than an unspeakable subservience to the Netanyahu government.
AKEL has been, is and will continue to be by the side of the Palestinian people until their final vindication, until their freedom. This will break the cycle of violence and bloodshed and will usher in days of peace and security for the peoples of Palestine and Israel, but also for the entire Middle East.
On the occasion of the Day, an AKEL delegation headed by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, will go to the Embassy of Palestine in Cyprus where he will have a meeting with the Ambassador and sign the book of solidarity.
