The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL met with the Ambassador of Iran

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stephanou, met today with the Ambassador of Iran Alireza Salarian. The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied by Vera Polycarpou, Head of International Relations and European Policy of AKEL.

The meeting an exchange of views on international issues of common interest took place and particular attention was paid to the situation in the region of the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean.  Great concern was expressed about the humanitarian disaster that has been going on for 5 weeks in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories as a whole. The need for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the bloodshed was underlined, as demanded by the Secretary General of the UN, all relevant international organisations and the relevant Resolution approved by the General Assembly of the UN.

The General Secretary of AKEL stressed that the Palestinian problem must be immediately resolved through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

S.Stefanou stressed that all the peoples of the world have the right and must live in peace and progress, therefore it is necessary to strengthen international law and to solve problems through diplomacy and dialogue.

Finally, the General Secretary of AKEL thanked the Iranian Ambassador for his country’s principled stance on the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of Resolutions of the UN.
