AKEL moves forward with optimism and unity towards the Statutory Congress of 26 November

12 November 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Central Committee of AKEL today concluded the debate on the changes to its statutes and rules and finalised the proposals to be put before the Party Statutory Congress on the 26th November. The debate that took place followed the broad democratic dialogue held in the previous weeks among the thousands of Party members, who overwhelmingly support the spirit and objectives of the changes.

As has already been announced, these changes have to do with the structures, functioning and procedures of the Party and concern issues such as the composition of the Central Committee, the procedure for the election of the General Secretary of the Party, the procedure for the selection of a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, the term limit for MPs/elected deputies, the incompatibility of certain Party positions with public office, changes to the Party’s district and regional organisational structure and ensuring even more transparency and scrutiny over the Party’s finances.

This collective and democratic procedure will culminate with the Statutory Congress set to convene on 26 November 2023 which will discuss the proposals put forward by the Central Committee and any others put forward by the delegates and subsequently, take the final decisions.

AKEL is moving towards this landmark with optimism and unity because this will make the Party itself more democratic and open to its thousands of members, more outward-looking to the wider Left and progressive spectrum, more effective in its decisions and in its daily struggles.
