The Presidential Office needs to give answers on salaries and pensions

Statement by Marina Savva, Member of the C.C. of AKEL

3 October 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

For two days now, press reports have been circulating that the President of the Republic and other government officials are receiving a civil servant’s pension together with their salary.

The President of the Republic above anyone else must give a reply to these press reports, which report that he has been receiving a pension for eight years, since the age of 45, without in fact having declared it in his asset declaration as he should have done.

Society, which is suffering and suffocating in conditions of unprecedented price increases and expensiveness, wants to know whether the President or/and other government officials are simultaneously receiving both a pension and a salary emanating from their post. This may on the one hand not be illegal, but it is however unquestionably provocative in the current circumstances.

And without any doubt, this is not consistent with the new culture and spirit that the President and those who supported him during the election claimed he would bring.
