AKEL amendment on Turkey’s responsibilities for the situation in Nagorno Karabakh adopted in the European Parliament

The amendments tabled by AKEL MEP George Georgiou on behalf of AKEL concerning Turkey’s involvement in the attacks launched by Azerbaijan on Nagorno Karabakh and the statements of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen were approved by the European Parliament.

More specifically, the amendment tabled by AKEL MEP Giorgios Georgiou added the following reference “…denounces Turkey’s participation in the arming of Azerbaijan and its full support for Azerbaijan’s attacks in both 2020 and 2023”. This amendment received 473 votes in favour, 46 against and 16 abstentions. The other Cypriot MEPs present voted in favour.

Unreliable energy partner

The second amendment concerns European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the statements she made during her visit to Baku and the signing of an agreement to double the amount of natural gas imported by the EU from Azerbaijan. In his amendment, AKEL MEP Georgiou “regrets the fact that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described Azerbaijan as a “reliable energy supplier'”.
