A delegation of AKEL, headed by the General of the Central Committee of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou, together with the President of Syriza-PA, Stefanos Kasselakis, today laid wreaths at the monument to the heroic martyrs of Greek-Turkish friendship, Dervis Ali Kavazoglou and Kostas Misiaouli, in Athienou. The laying of wreaths took place in the presence of the daughter of Kostas Miasiaouli, Stella.

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou informed the President of Syriza-PA about the murder of the two militants of AKEL in April 1965 and the importance of their sacrifice for the reunification of the two communities as part of the ongoing struggle against the Turkish occupation and the division of our island.

On the occasion of his presence in Athienou, the General Secretary of AKEL informed about the demand of the residents of the region, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, for the opening of the Athienou – Pyroio checkpoint. Underlining the need for the opening of the Athienou checkpoint, Stefanos Stefanou noted that “the opening of the checkpoints made it possible for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to come together en masse” and at the same time “dispelled the argument of the forces in favour of partition that such a development would supposedly lead to problems between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, which did not happen”.

The joint effort, which is strengthened by the opening of the checkpoints, S.Stefanou said, “sends a message internationally that the Cyprus problem must be resolved, the occupation must be ended, the country and the people should be reunited and that we should march together”.
