The backward thinking of the DISY government and DIKO is behind their reactions to sex education
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
1 December 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The attempt by the Minister of Education, Prodromos Prodromou, to block the latest adoption of the draft bill on sex education is not only institutionally unacceptable. It is first and foremost revealing of the backward and outdated obsessions that pervade the Minister of Education and the DISY government, as well as all those who align themselves with the most conservative circles of society. Everything that the DISY government and the leadership of DIKO have remembered to put forward today – after years of debating the proposal in Parliament without raising any objections – is a flimsy excuse.
Their fixations and obsessions are unfounded and baseless. Scientifically based, pedagogically adapted, comprehensive sex education at all levels of education is a right of children and young people. It is also a proven shield to protect the younger generation from all kinds of risks to their lives, health and well-being. It is also one of the most important tools in the fight against sexual abuse and exploitation of children.
