The Cyprus problem faces a crucial dilemma
AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas on the Guterres report:
7 July 2022, ‘Astra’ radio station
The fact that the Cyprus problem is at its worst point is reflected in the Report of UN Secretary General on the renewal of the UN Peace Keeping Force’s mandate in Cyprus, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson G.Koukoumas said.
Speaking to ‘Astra’ Morning Edition program, Giorgos Koukoumas noted that the Report is one of the worst tabled in recent years, adding that the basis for the solution to the Cyprus problem is being shaken, not only by Turkey, but by the international community too.
Giorgos Koukoumas pointed out that although there is a timid reference to the UN Secretary General being guided by the Resolutions of the UN Security Council, there is no reference whatsoever to the solution of Bi-zonal Bicommunal Federation.
At the same time, the AKEL C.C. Spokesperson said that the Cyprus problem is facing a crucial dilemma, that is to say, whether to continue the efforts on the basis of a solution or whether the challenging of the agreed framework will begin.
As G.Koukoumas said, this is an issue that is reflected in the Presidential Elections.
He stressed that one the one hand there is the candidacy of Andreas Mavroyiannis who is absolutely committed to the agreed framework and on the other, the candidacies of the two DISY party member candidates who, as he said, open up the Pandora’s Box with their positions.
The AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson explained that Nikos Christodoulides no longer refers to the Guterres Framework, while Averof Neophytou, with his idea of Cyprus becoming a member of NATO, is in conflict with the agreed framework regarding the country’s security system after the solution of the Cyprus problem.
