AKEL on the 77th anniversary of the Antifascist Victory of the Peoples

 

Fascism never again!

AKEL commemorates the 9th of May, the day of the Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples that ended the Second World War by rescuing humanity from the ravages of Nazism. We pay tribute to all the peoples of the world who rallied around the anti-Hitler coalition, to the fighters of the Resistance movements throughout Europe.

We honor the leading contribution of the Soviet Union which, at the cost of the sacrifice of tens of millions of people, sealed the victory of the peoples of the world. We also remember with respect and pride the thousands of Cypriot volunteers – Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots – who sacrificed their lives on the fields of war. The decision of the C.C. of AKEL on 16 June 1943, as a result of which hundreds of Cypriots volunteered to fight Hitlerism, represents page of honor and glory in the history of our Party and Cyprus.

The anniversary recalls the barbarity of the war and the nature of fascism, which gave birth to the concentration camps and the Holocaust. It reminds us of the magnitude of the threat posed by today’s fascist far-right, which is guided by the same misanthropic ideology that had drowned in blood and massacred Europe and the world. The commemoration and honor of 9 May demands the waging of a consistent struggle against fascism which is targeting democratic freedoms and human rights, social gains and peace.

The 9 May and the Red flag flying over the German Reichstag were and will remain a historical and universal symbol of the power of the peoples before which no one is invincible.
