Meeting of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL with a delegation of the Coordination Committee of the nine communities of the Vasilikos area

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, held a meeting today with local community leaders of the Vasilikos region. The main topic of discussion was the possible transfer of the asphalt plants to the Kalavasou community.

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL reiterated that AKEL supports the struggle of all the communities confronting this problem. S.Stefanou noted that AKEL had very early on submitted alternative proposals to the government so that a definitive and holistic solution to the problem could be found. Among other things, AKEL proposed the carrying out of a comprehensive spatial planning study to demonstrate which area could accommodate such industries. He also stressed that all the procedures must be transparent and subject to public consultation.

AKEL does not accept the logic of transferring the problem from one region to another. Serving the public interest, the health and quality of life of the people must be put above any vested interests.

The meeting was attended by the Local Community Leaders of Psematismenou, Kalavasos, Choirokoitia, Zygios and Mari villages. The AKEL delegation was headed by Chrystalla Antoniou AKEL Larnaca District Secretary, AKEL MP’s Andreas Pasiourtides and Nikos Kettiros, the Head of Energy and Environment Policy of AKEL, Christina Nicolaou and Renos Georgiou, member of the AKEL Larnaca District Committee.
