Concerns about the test to stay in schools intensify
Statement by AKEL MP Christos Christofias after the meeting of the Parliamentary Education and Culture Committee
19 January 2022
Our concerns are growing in relation to the implementation of the “test to stay” measure in schools. This is because there is a growing number of voices from members of the pandemic response team of scientists expressing a different view on the measure. In addition, the statements made by Dra Fellas in relation to the effects on children’s mental health and behaviour that the implementation of this measure may have on their mental health and behaviour cannot be disregarded.
We once again express our displeasure at the sloppy manner in which the government ruling forces are handling this issue. While they issued a decree to implement the measure last Monday, they froze it, held a meeting with the involved parties – something they should have done from the very beginning – only to finally announce its implementation next Monday on a voluntary basis. Without yet knowing how it will be implemented and apparently continuing to ignore the concerns and disagreements of teachers, parents and students organisations/associations.
