Statement by Toumazos Tsielepis, Head of the Cyprus Problem Office of the C.C. of ΑΚΕΛ on the Cyprus problem
27th May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
There is a state in the modern world that is in danger of acquiring a land border with Turkey – our own homeland. That’s where the erratic handlings of Anastasiades-DISY on the Cyprus problem have led us to.
After the collapse at Crans Montana, Turkey proceeded with new fait accompli in Varosha and the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus. It imposed Tatar, an advocate of partition, on the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community. It returned after decades to the position in favor of a two states solution and submitted it at the recent Geneva conference.
The Secretary General of the UN and the international community have rejected the two state solution. At the same time, however, we have been recipients of strange proposals about ‘sovereign equality’ and ‘two peoples’ as a starting point for the resumption of talks. We have been coming under pressure to save supposedly the prestige of Turkey and Tatar. In reality, however, such approaches alter the framework of the negotiation and solution.
But why did we reach this point, just one step from disaster?
All this is not unrelated to the contradictory and dangerous policy pursued by Anastasiades – DISY: its successive experimentations, the questioning of basic convergences that have been recorded, the Guterres Framework and the casting of shadows over the basis of the solution. And indeed, when Anastasiades – DISY had as their interlocutor for five whole years not Tatar, but Akinci.
The only political force that was tirelessly warning about the consequences of the handlings made by Anastasiades and DISY, and which has a vision and proposal on the Cyprus problem, is AKEL.
Consistent to our patriotic duty, we shall continue to struggle to prevent the final partition that in time will lead to the creation of a land border with Turkey.
On 30th May, we vote for and strengthen AKEL.
We strengthen the struggle for a solution that will liberate and reunify our country and people.
Let’s move forward.
With honesty, clarity and sincerity.
