Another example of the Anastasiades government’s authoritarianism and social callousness is the erratic withdrawal of the Bill on Courts
Statement of Aristos Damianou, AKEL MP and Head of Legal Affairs Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21st April 2021, Nicosia
The erratic withdrawal of the Bill on Courts, just a few hours before Parliament’s last Plenary Session is yet another example of the Anastasiades-DISY government’s authoritarianism and social callousness. Through a democratic process, AKEL and other parties in Parliament did the self-evident. We have tried to bring about improvements in the Bill that would restore the necessary balance between the rights of borrowers and banks.
The government ruling forces, repeating their bad practices, disrespected Parliament, believing that parties and MP’s should simply ratify their decisions. In essence, the Anastasiades-DISY government’s philosophy demands the obedient implementation of government policies, obviously ignoring the fact that in 2021 democracy operates in Cyprus.
AKEL-Left-New Forces will continue the targeted effort to protect borrowers and restore social rights, which were forcibly taken away from citizens by the government ruling forces and their partners in the Memoranda and the Troika.
