Statements by the General Secretary AKEL A.Kyprianou on the extending by another 12 months of the statute of limitations on civil liability
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 9th April 2021, Nicosia
“On the occasion of yesterday’s debate we had in Parliament on the draft bill which we have submitted as AKEL for extending by another 12 months the statute of limitations on civil liability (Note: amendment of a law allowing for civil lawsuits to be filed against former officers or executives of the now-defunct Cooperative Bank), I want to address the Legal Service. We are particularly concerned that, almost 2 years after the conclusion of the Commission of Inquiry looking into the Cyprus Cooperative Bank sell-off scandal, the Legal Service has not acted in the direction of those who the Inquiry’s findings pointed out as primarily responsible for the collapse of the Coop Bank and its selling off to the private sector.
Instead, we hear that people who are involved in very small cases are called to testify.
It is therefore our demand and I call on the Attorney General to act first and foremost in the direction of those who are being blamed by the Inquiry’s finding that they are the ones responsible for the destruction of the cooperative movement and I want to make it clear that we will bring the matter up constantly until they finally realize that they must operate on the basis of the Inquiry’s findings and not on the basis of what serves any political party or political figures or any other expediencies/considerations.”
