The government needs to take more initiatives and carry out an international campaign to reverse the negative fait accompli

Statement by Christos Christofides, AKEL Nicosia-Keryneia District Secretary on the Cyprus problem developments

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21st November 2020, Nicosia

We are facing a series of negative developments on the Cyprus problem which are driving our country into a very difficult situation. Erdogan’s presence in the fenced off city of Famagusta last Sunday marked another negative historical development in a dangerous course that is endangering our people’s future. To address the unacceptable Turkish provocation initiatives need to be taken. It is with sadness that we are observing the international community following Turkey’s provocative actions and the negative developments almost indifferently.

At this very moment the government needs to take more initiatives and carry out an international campaign so that we can reverse the negative fait accompli that are unfortunately constantly being created. By simply following developments you cannot address the situation. These initiatives must aim at resuming a dialogue on the correct basis for an overall solution to the Cyprus problem that will reunite and liberate our country. This is the way of the redemption of our people. At the same time, the government’s initiatives must seek to address the Turkish provocative actions and avoid any new ones being imposed.

The picture of last Sunday with Erdogan in Varosha and the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs absent from the developments must not be repeated.
