General Secretary of AKEL on Varosha: Lessons must be drawn by those promoting illusions about sanctions on Turkey
16 November 2020, ‘Astra’ radio station
The government’s approach on the issue of properties in Famagusta is correct, the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou noted.
Speaking to ‘Astra’, he recalled that in 2014 recourses were made to the “Compensation Committee” in the occupied areas, but a perspective was being created with the resumption of negotiations at that time.
Today, A.Kyprianou added, it is not certain that talks will begin and things are changing course.
Regarding what the government should have done on the issue of Famagusta, Andros Kyprianou recalled the appeals that were issued by AKEL calling on the government to take action for the resumption of the dialogue so that the provocative actions and the creation of new fait accompli by Turkey would be terminated.
AKEL’s views were not listened to, he said and today we are confronted with what we all see before us. The General Secretary of AKEL added that Akinci’s presence at the helm of the Turkish Cypriot community remained unused, while today, he added, after the assumption by Tatar of the leadership of the TC community, the government is trying to take initiatives to resume the dialogue.
Regarding the resumption of talks, the General Secretary of AKEL expressed the hope that the arrival of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lutte in a few days will yield positive results.
As to yesterday’s events in the occupied territories and the reactions, Andros Kyprianou said that the UN reacted with an announcement as they do not have any other way of reacting.
He noted that lessons must be drawn from these developments by those forces and circles who are promoting illusions among the people either on the form of the solution to the Cyprus problem or on the issue of imposing sanctions against Turkey.
