AKEL express deep concern about Turkey’s machinations to colonalise Famagusta

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou on Turkey’s provocative actions and developments on the issue of Famagusta

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th August 2020, Nicosia

We are extremely worried about the developments both within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus and surrounding the issue of Famagusta. It is a fact that Turkey appears much more provocative and much more aggressive than before.

Mr. Anastasiades and the ruling Democratic Rally DISY party, however, when they were in opposition, said that every policy should be judged by its results. They have been in power for seven years now and the results of their policy on the issues concerning the EEZ and on the issue of Famagusta, I repeat, are extremely worrying.

The condemnatory statements being made by the European Union and others against Turkey are positive. But they do not solve the problem. They do not bring us closer to the solution, to the de-escalation of the crisis and to the beginning of a meaningful dialogue for the solution of the problems.

As far as the Cyprus problem is concerned, I regret to note that while the government declares it is satisfied with the statements issued by the EU – and the statements are satisfactory – it should at the same time be expressing and demonstrating its concern about where the Cyprus problem is being led to. And AKEL’s concern is focused on the fact that the prospect of the solution of the Cyprus problem, the prospect of utilizing the natural wealth we have, and unfortunately the final partition of the Republic of Cyprus is increasingly becoming more and more distant. And all these developments cannot but worry us.

We are also concerned about the scheming and machinations being made by the Turkish side for the colonalisation of Famagusta and unfortunately it seems that the government finds it impossible to intervene to stop this process. The responsibilities of the Anastasiades government and DISY will be enormous if Famagusta is colonalised and if the solution of the Cyprus problem will be rendered distant and we are led to the final partition of the Republic of Cyprus.
